Instacart makes changes, Chicago says no, and drivers get a win. LegalRideshare breaks it down.
Instacart is now requiring customers who remove tips after delivery to leave feedback, and claims it will deactivate any customer who consistently removes tips. The company also said that it is reducing the tip-adjustment window (the time period for how long a customer can change the tip) from three days to 24 hours.
For Chicago drivers looking forward to summer fests, we’ve got some bad news: They’re all canceled. WGN reported:
The City of Chicago is canceling “all permitted special events,” including Lollapalooza, Taste of Chicago, and other annual summer traditions through Labor Day, according to a release.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the decision to cancel the events “heartbreaking” Tuesday, saying large-scale events like Lollapalooza are unlikely to take place until there is a vaccine for COVID-19.
As the pandemic changed our lives, it also changed rideshare. NPR covered the story, adding:
[Uber] is now requiring all drivers and passengers in the U.S. and some other countries to wear masks, and using facial scanning to make sure drivers comply.
Some drivers have told NPR they are concerned the company may cut off their access to Uber if they refuse to pick up riders who do not wear masks.
Drivers scored a big victory in California as the state officially classified them as employees. Mercury News reported:
The CPUC said in its decision that it will consider drivers for ride-hailing companies to be employees of those firms in accordance with the state’s AB 5 law, which went into effect on Jan. 1.
Seattle’s “Hazard Pay” has Instacart saying “NO WAY!” PYMNTS explains:
Seattle’s City Council is debating a bill to force eCommerce ordering and transportation platforms like Instacart and Uber to give drivers at least $5 “premium pay” for each trip made during the pandemic and until as long as 2023. Now, Instacart is threatening to halt operations there rather than pay up.
